How to Download eBooks For Free on Android

In this post, you will learn about the best websites with free ebooks you can add to your Google Playbook library.

If you own a Gmail account, you can collect your own e-book library without having to sign up for another site. These books are stored in the cloud. This means you can access it from any device, not just your computer.

Adding ease of use and simplicity, anyone who is interested in an eBook can choose a Google Playbook.

Obviously, there are enough free books on Google Play, and this post has tips and tricks to help you navigate effectively.

However, Google Play Books is a very closed ecosystem that relies heavily on Google's scan book project. Most of the free books here are those that have entered the public domain. In addition, most of the free public domain titles are available only as scan page pdf files.

That's why this list is an opportunity to find other free e-book sources compatible with Google Play, including books by modern authors.

Before creating a list, I'll share some useful tips.

To use Google PlayBook, you must live in a country where the service was officially launched. There are currently 26 countries on the list.

You can go to this link to access Google Playbook.

To add your own book, click Upload in the left panel, then click the blue Upload File button.

You can upload up to 1,000 own books and documents. You can add an unlimited number of publications in the Google Playbook.

Your book needs to be uploaded in pdf or epub format without DRM (what is it?).

When the book is displayed in Google Play's personal library, it can be accessed from any computer (via a web browser), as well as from a tablet or smartphone (via the Android or iOS Google Playbook application). Books are synced across all devices, such as the latest reading locations, notes, and bookmarks.

My general advice is that I am trying to select epub files instead of pdf if possible.

epub files are much more flexible. Users can adjust to multiple settings. You can change the font size, typeface, or switch to night mode (white text on a black background). So reading epub books on a small screen is much more enjoyable than fixed-layout PDF documents.

If you can find a free book on Google Play and it's only available as a pdf file that contains the pages scanned for that book, browse other public domain sites from the list below. You can find the same title in epub format.

1. Google PlayBook.

I like Google Play because it's simple. Unlike Amazon, which has book details on one page, there are over 200 outgoing links (sic!). Google Play allows you to find books in a much smoother and calmer way.

Currently, there are over 4 million books on Google Play. It seems a lot compared to the Kindle Store, which has less than 2.5 million titles, but it's not too exciting.

Google Play Books offers much less modern e-book publishing than Amazon. The 4 million books in the Google Bookstore come primarily from Google's own project (now Google Books, formerly Google Book Search), which is used to scan prints.

So far, Google Books has scanned and saved over 30 million publications. Obviously, some of them were taken to Google Playbook. This publication has entered the public domain. In other words, it can be provided free of charge in digital format.

This post explained how to find free books on Google Play. In general, use the search bar extensively. If you're doing a search regardless of a specific search, you can filter the book to only show free books (see screenshot below).

The good thing is that by default, Google displays a new title. Scroll down and a book from the Google Scan Project will appear. Normally, if you don't have a book cover and only have a title page, that book can only be used as a scanned PDF.

The main drawback of Google Play Books is the lack of the option to search for foreign language books. And other sites can be very useful.

2. Internet Archive.

The Internet Resource Center is a non-profit digital library with the mission of "universal access to all knowledge." The website is a huge digital library of text, audio and video files. E-books and text over 3.8 mln Subgroups include American Libraries, Canadian Libraries, Project Gutenberg's book, the title of the Million Books Project, and books for children.

When you find an interesting book, a list of available formats is displayed in the left panel. In most cases, epub is included.

3. Amazon Kindle.

There is no way to mention Kindle when talking about the free ebook app. One of the most popular books reading apps. You can sign up and download it here. And I read a lot of free books from romance to fiction, non-fiction, history, and almost all categories.

You can also buy what you want to read. Ideal for those who cannot purchase Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet and still want to get the same taste. It is available for both iOS and Android versions.

4. Read well.

Probably the most popular reading community. You can find many free books at Goodreads. There are also a lot of paid books, but this is a very popular app for those who want to get the best recommendations.

You can access quotes, play quizzes, and even participate in prizes. This is an online community where you can find almost any title, so it's a paradise for readers.

5. Smash word.

Smashwords is one of the most popular places to find e-books from independent authors and publishers. Books are available in multiple languages, all without DRM, and many authors offer their publications for free.

The site distributes books to several major bookstores, but unfortunately, Google Playbook is not one of them. In other words, to find new titles in popular categories, you can find them in Smashwords.

Use the top 3 filter bar combinations to quickly jump to the list of free ebooks. For example, here is a link to a free bestseller (over 50k words).

Smashwords currently has about 25,000 free e-books. You can get a list of free titles in your favorite genres by first selecting a category and then selecting the Free tab. For example, there are 2,100 sci-fi books available for free on Smashwords.

6. Al Dico

There are a free version and a premium version. If you don't want to spend money, you can read your favorite eBook in the free version. Aldiko is best for those who want a rich interface for reading. You have access to a free public library with access to numerous free books at no extra cost.

7. Wattpad

Wattpad has become a community of readers whose readers promote, appreciate and criticize each other's work. You can get great exposure to your own work, and at the same time, readers have access to numerous books for free. Offline access is possible. You can sync your reading progress across multiple devices and continue on the left.

8. Open library

Open Libraries are another initiative of Internet archives. This site is positioned as "classical literature of the world at your fingertips." There are over 1,000,000 free e-book titles.

The main advantage of the Open Library is that it is run by a strong community. Like Wikipedia for eBooks.

If there is more than one edition in the book, it is displayed in the open library. For example, Tom Sawyer's Adventures by Mark Twain, first published in 1876, has 306 editions, mostly with separate download directories.

9. Many books

The site offers 29,000 free e-books. The site is organized and you can easily browse books or find recommendations. The book detail page shows the word count and readability, as well as common fields such as author or publication date. The number of available formats is impressive. Epub included.

10. DigiLibraries

This site is an online e-book catalog where you can find almost 30,000 titles. All free. There are several categories to choose from. The most popular are collections of poetry, youth fiction, and literature.

11. Feedbooks

In the feedback, you can find both fiction and nonfiction in the public domain (public domain section) and free modern books (the original section). Since this site is based in France, it has many titles in French in other languages as well as English.

The site offers RSS feeds of specific categories, so you can subscribe and get new books as soon as you can add them.

Final Thought

Google decided to enter the eBook business at the end, but one of the things that Google eBookstore wins is simplicity. In fact, anyone using a Gmail account or an Android device can read books without hassle.
